Mountain Hike
Royal Palace at Mount Schachen - via Partnachklamm gorge and Kälbersteig
This tour will first take you through Partnachklamm gorge and then on royal paths to the royal palace (Königshaus) at Mount Schachen, surrounded by the idyllic alpine world, that once enchanted King Ludwig II.
Your walk commences at the Olympic Ski Stadium. It is advisable to have a look at the large information board for orientation purposes before following the road upstream along the river Partnach. To the right of the path you will see crosses, which were set up in the memory of accident victims. Further along the way you will soon pass the base terminal of the cable car leading up to Graseck. Just after that, an asphalted path takes you to the entrance of the Partnachklamm gorge. Right by the water you will find the steep footpath leading through Partnachklamm gorge. At the end of the gorge the river Partnach runs into a wide valley. Follow the river upstream for a bit further until you reach a junction in the way. Continue straight on into the woods in the direction of “Schachen via Kälbersteig”. The “Kälbersteig” path will take you uphill for a further 3 hours or so. Half way up this path crosses the “Königsweg” (king's path), on which King Ludwig used to ride to his palace in a carriage. The footpath is well signposted throughout.
