TRADITION & CRAFTSMANSHIP
LIVING CUSTOMS IN GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a region with a history. It is important to us to pass on these stories from generation to generation. To pass on old customs into the present
and to keep our cultural heritage alive.
There is something special here and we like to show it. Be it in our traditional craftsmanship, with traditional festivals or simply in ourselves. Because anyone who
who has taken a closer look knows that not all Garmisch-Partenkirchner are the same! For a long time, Garmisch and Partenkirchen were independent districts, and
and you can still see that today, for example in the traditional costumes.
Craftmanship
The old craftsmanship can still be felt and experienced on every corner in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. We are proud to carry on what our grandmothers and grandfathers taught us with patience and attention to detail: the traditional craftsmanship of our region.
Even today, you can still discover living craftsmanship in every nook and cranny. Be it the elaborate wooden larvae for the carnival season, the famous Manderl-Weiberl benches or the detailed figures of saints - Garmisch-Partenkirchen is characterized by traditional craftsmanship. If you let your gaze wander upwards as you stroll through the alleyways, you will also discover works of art: the famous Lüftlmalerei paintings on the facades of the houses make a stroll through Garmisch-Partenkirchen a picture-book excursion in the truest sense of the word.
Celebrations & socializing
There is no better way to discover traditional customs than at the numerous seasonal events. Because if there's one thing we Bavarians know how to do, it's celebrate with heart and soul. Even as a vacation guest, you are welcome to take a seat on the beer bench, raise a glass with the locals and enjoy yourself in typical white and blue style. You are sure to discover one or two traditions along the way. You will also learn how to "Stoahebn", "Fingerhakln" or "Goaslschnalzen".
Alpine pasture & grazing
The cultivation of alpine pastures is a centuries-old tradition in Werdenfelser Land and characterizes the appearance of the mountain meadows. The herdsmen and shepherds live on the mountain pastures throughout the summer and have a special relationship with nature and their animals. After a long summer, the animals are led back down into the valley at the cattle drive. Once all the cattle are safely back, they are "crowned" and the animals are magnificently decorated.
