Nature Trail
Castle nature trail - Around the ruins of Castle Werdenfels
This nature trail is well laid out geographically: with only one small uphill section this walk is particularly suitable for less experienced walkers and families with small children.
The nature trail starts with the first information point on the banks of the Pflegersee, directly opposite the entrance to the swimming baths. From here walk a few metres back across the car park and turn left into a well-kept forest path. Continue along the footpath downhill until you reach the signpost, which points to the left. Soon you arrive at the next highlight, the lime production site, which is spread across various points in this area. On the left a small path leads into the woods – you will return along this path to the main trail later on. Keep to the left and a narrow forest path leads you to the quarry from which the limestone used to make the bricks from which Castle Werdenfels was built was excavated. The path through the deciduous forest now curves to the right. Keep your eyes peeled here, else you might not see the old wagon tracks on the mossy forest floor. After a slight incline you will make your way onto a forest road. At the crossing keep to the left and from here it's only a few more paces until you see the Werdenfelser Hut. In front of the hut a newly laid path branches to the right which takes you straight to the castle entrance. Take a few moments to appreciate the old masonry and to enjoy the view. If you feel hungry, you can stop for a bite to eat in the Werdenfelser Hut on your way back. Just below the hut the path splits in two, take the left fork and head towards the Schmölzer lake. The path here is narrow and stony, but quickly joins back up with a forest road. Keep right before reaching the lake then join the waterside path. After passing the lake you will see a large wooden post indicating the path to the left, back up the hill to your starting point. The last section of the path back to the car park runs parallel to the road, but still remains within the woods.
