Via St. Anton, Tannenhütte and Eckenhütte to the Wank

This tour takes you through the relict pine forest above Partenkirchen, with a fantastic view of the valley, the Waxensteine, Wetterstein and Zugspitze massifs.

The tour starts at the Wankbahn car park in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It is best to orientate yourself by the large information board before following the forest path right next to the board. This will lead you to a carriage road, which you follow uphill for a short distance. At the first crossroads, turn right past the Berggasthof Panorama and St Anton Church. Above the church, the path branches off in the direction of Tannenhütte and leads uphill in serpentines. Pass the Josefibichl (wayside cross) and turn left uphill past the Schalmeischlucht to reach the Tannenhütte.

Before the hut, the path leads uphill and directly to the Eckenhütte and on to the middle station of the Wankbahn cable car. The ascent to the Wank summit takes about 1 hour from the middle station via serpentines - steadily uphill, but rewarded with a marvellous view. This ascent on the south side of the Wank is almost always in the sun - take plenty of drinks with you in warm weather.

For the descent, take the route via the Esterbergalm. From the Wank summit, first head north along a steep path down to the Esterbergalm (1,262 m) and then continue along a well-maintained path to the Daxkapelle (962 m) back to the valley station of the Wankbahn cable car. You should bring some stamina for this variant into the beautiful Estergebirge (descent 2 h).
