Bike Riding
Around the Wetterstein Mountains
The classic: around the Wetterstein Mountains with the Zugspitze.
At the station turn right and cross the taxi stand to Lagerhausstraße. This street leads into Gehfeldstraße. After ca. 200 m, the road forks. Ensure to keep right. At the end of Kochelbergstraße cross the railway tracks and turn right, heading alongside the tracks and passing the Hausbergbahn cable car. In front of the bus station Hammersbacher Fußweg cross the tracks to the right and shortly after, turn left in the direction of Grainau. At the square “Oberer Dorfplatz” in Grainau turn left into the way uphill to Neuneralm. From there, go on to Christlhütte and, beyond the road, through the forest up to Eibsee. Near the Eibsee-Hotel you can take a short break to enjoy the breathtaking view of the turquoise-blue lake and the Zugspitze. After having passed the café and hotel-owned boat landing place, turn left in the direction of Hochthörlenhütte. Always follow the main path uphill (push your bike for around 80 m). After a while you will have the opportunity for a detour to the vantage point Eibseeblick, which offers an unrivalled view of the valley. Finally, the path becomes narrower and leads you directly to the Alpine hut Hochthörlenhütte. Another break is followed by a steep downhill part in the direction of “Zugspitzbahn/Ehrwald”. At the Ehrwald town limits turn left in the “Ebne”, which you will leave again to the right on Alpenhofstraße after just a few metres. Then, take Hauptstraße on the left to the restaurant “Gasthof Grüner Baum” and pedal to the left, reaching the Ehrwalder Almbahnen cable car via the Ludwig-Ganghofer-Straße. From there, the tarmac road winds uphill at the Alpine hut Ehrwalder Alm, which is located between the mountains of the Mieminger Kette and Wetterstein. With a view of the surrounding jagged rocky giants you can recover from the climb. The steepest and longest climbs are now behind you already. After a break, cycle to the right uphill for 2 km, and then turn left in the direction of Leutasch. Passing the lake Igelsee downhill through the Gaistal, turn right at the bend to the left at the Gaisbachalm cable car. Shortly afterwards go in the direction of Oberleutasch. Cross the Gaisbach stream and keep left along the stream “Leutascher Ache”, below the mountain “Hohe Munde” (2,662 m), until you arrive in the villages Klamm/Obern. Alongside the stream, the cycling path leads you comfortably through the Leutaschtal valley. In Burggraben, follow Leutascher Straße on the right – above the gorge – until just before Mittenwald. In a hairpin bend to the right you will leave the road to the left and follow the tarmac road “Am Kreuth” uphill. Cycle to the right at the next turnoff – if you go right, you will come to Lake Lautersee. A relatively level gravel path takes you to lake Ferchensee. Around 800 m after the restaurant, at Ferchensee, ignore the first turnoff to the right and turn right only at the next possibility. Now, the way winds along the Ferchenbach stream to a fork shortly before reaching Schlosshotel Elmau. Keep left and you will soon meet a tarmac road, close to the impressive building. Follow the road for a few metres to the right, and then turn left in the direction of Hintergraseck. After ca. 120 m keep right, cross the bridge over the Ferchenbach stream and cycle on to the right to the restaurant “Berggasthof Eckbauer”. After a while you leave the broad gravel lane and follow a narrower path uphill through the forest to Wamberg. At the intersection in the village turn left, passing the church and cemetery. This street takes you back down to the valley, via the Kainzenbad swimming pool to the Olympia Skistadion (Olympic skiing stadium). Alongside the railway tracks pedal back to the train station.
