From Mount Kreuzeck over Schöngänge and the Nordwandsteig
A very nice ‘via ferrata’ within a beautiful and impressive landscape. It is well accessible by cable car.
From the top terminal of the Kreuzeckbahn cable car (1,650 m), walk in the southwest direction to the Hochalm. Now, follow the broad hiking path - in wintertime this is a ski slope - uphill, until you pass the hut of the Mountain Rescue Service (Bergwacht). Continue on the hiking path. When the path splits, turn left and follow the signpost “Schöngänge". Here, the via ferrata through the Schöngänge starts. This via ferrata partly involves climbing and, in damp weather, the route partially tends to be slippery. When you have passed the steep rock face, the detour to the summit of the Bernadeinwand is worth the effort. When you have climbed out of the via ferrata, walk in the westward direction through the northern slope of the Alpspitze. You will now hike downward along the Nordwandsteig (track at the northern slope) and to the left of the cirque (follow the Alpine markings: red points). When you have reached the foot of the northern slope of Mount Alpspitze, the way will lead you directly to the top terminal of the Alpspitzbahn cable car.
