Mountain Hike
Hike to Weilheimer Hütte on Mount Krottenkopf with an overnight stay in the Alpine hut
A wonderful hike through a quiet valley up in the mountains. This tour is perfect to stay overnight – make sure you do not miss the sunrise on Mount Krottenkopf, it is worth seeing!
The tour starts at the parking site of the Wankbahn cable car in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Here, you can orientate yourself at the large information board with a hiking map. Now, follow the road past the rock climbing centre and the Daxkapelle (chapel) to Esterbergalm. The Esterbergalm is always worth stopping by, no matter whether you do so now during your ascent or on your way back. The path leads past Esterbergalm and further out of the valley up in the mountains. You will pass Farchanter Alm (the Alpine hut is also called Hintere Esterbergalm) and follow the path, which is, by the way, part of the VIA ALPINA (a trail leading over the Alps). Approx. 1 to 1.5 km after Farchanter Alm, turn right to the trail along the Finzbach stream. The signs “Krün/Finzbach” will point the way. Keep to the left and stay on VIA ALPINA and follow the signs to the Krottenkopf/Weilheimer Hütte. Now, the path will lead you uphill. Towards its end, it becomes quite steep, but when you have reached the saddle between Mount Bischof and Mount Krottenkopf, you will be rewarded with great views over the Valley of the Loisach and, at a distance, over the Ammer Mountains. It is not far now, just one descent and a quite short ascent and you will reach Weilheimer Hütte. If you feel like it, you can climb to the summit of Mount Krottenkopf. Turn left directly at the Weilheimer Hütte onto the steep 130 metres to the summit crucifix.
