Bike Riding
Up to the King’s place – ride your mountain bike up to the royal hunting lodge at Mount Schachen
This tour will take you on royal paths through enchanted mountain hamlets
to the royal hunting lodge at Mount Schachen, surrounded by the idyllic alpine world, that once enchanted King Ludwig II of Bavaria.
You will start at the station, where you keep right, crossing the Taxi stands and aiming for Lagerhausstrasse, which turns into Gehfeldstrasse. After approximately 200 m, turn right at the junction. At the end of Kochelbergstrasse, cross the railway line and turn left. Then stay parallel to the tracks and take a right at the next junction. After 5 minutes cross a bridge, where you take another right turn, taking you upstream along the river Partnach in the direction of Partnachklamm gorge. After the wooden bridge before the gorge, you will turn left on a steep incline (30% - if this is a bit too steep, don’t worry about getting off and pushing your bike for a bit – the steep stretch is only very short). Four bends further on, you will reach Vordergraseck, where you turn left, going to Hintergraseck. Then cycle across a beautiful Alpine pasture, at whose other End you will pass through a gate. You will then carry on uphill, ignoring the path going off to the left for Eckbauer, and you will get to a small path crossing a bridge. After the bridge carry on uphill to the hikers’ car park at Elmau. From here, carry on along the Elmau river for a one kilometer flat stretch. A good forest road will then take you to a junction on a slight incline, which becomes steeper after a while. Keep left at this junction. After approximately 100 m turn right and follow the signs for the “Wettersteinalm” Alpine hut. The path will then get a bit bumpier, until you reach the gate for the pastures of the Alpine hut Wettersteinalm. Turn right and follow the narrower gravel path. From here it is about another five kilometers to the royal hunting lodge, Königshaus, at Mount Schachen. Return to Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the same route. Alternatively, you can take the toll road from Elmau to Klais, passing Kranzbach castle, and then returning to Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the cycle path leading alongside the state road B2.
